According to the World Bank, over 1.4 billion people live without electricity, and many more are not connected to the “electricity grid”. This statistic includes approximately 550 million people in Africa alone. One way to generate electricity on a small scale is by using bicycles to spin a generator, thereby producing electricity. Using a bike-powered generator could allow people around the world to produce energy on their own to power things such as lights, radios, and chargers to help themselves and their family.
Our GAP group's long term goals are to create an environmentally friendly bike for education and use. Building something that helps others will not only help us, but also our community here at Brookwood. We hope to acquire a generator for a bicycle. Our first mission will be to assemble this and power a guitar amplifier. Below is an example of a bike-powered band (meaning their amplifiers are powered by bike-generators) based near Boston called Melodeego. Their mission statement is to,"bring as many people as possible into this same state of hopeful, committed action, unleashing an unstoppable wave of human strength and creativity."
