Driving Question:
Can we get Brookwood students to realize the concrete things they can be doing to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases being emitted into the atmosphere?

Mission Statement
Many people have heard of climate change, but don't know how it is caused. This group has been formed to spread awareness about climate change, and how we can help prevent it. We hope to accomplish this by talking with various local and global people and spread awareness and hopefully they will end up with a better understanding of climate change, and how they can slow down or even prevent climate change.

Overview of Our Year so Far
Over the course of the year we have tried to spread awareness to people about climate change. On the 27th of April we did the Power Down Challenge by Polar Bears International. This is basically a challenge where the whole upper school turned off the power for an hour. We had a conversation with FAWE about climate change, our group and their group. Our teacher, Mr. Lehrer, was contacted by the Global Issues Network about our class' gap groups.

Local Project:
Climate change is caused by many things, some of the main causes are deforestation, and harmful emissions like carbon dioxide which are caused by our usage of fossil fuels. These all are speeding up animal extinction, increasing extreme weather events, the rise of the temperature of our planet, flooding, drought, and the melting of ice glaciers which cause sea levels to rise.
The people who contribute the most to climate change are very unaware of how they cause it. Using electricity, gasoline, and heat are the biggest contributors to climate change. Deforestation is another way that people contribute to climate change.
Our goal is to spread awareness of these and help keep the earth healthy and thrive by doing a presentation and through communicating with our partner schools.
The ocean covers 70 percent of our planet's surface and can absorb carbon dioxide, making the ocean more acidic. When carbon dioxide goes into the atmosphere, 30 to 40 percent of it goes back into the oceans which creates a chemical reaction that creates carbonic acid. This carbonic acid lowers the Ph in the oceans which kills sea life.
Global warming is what happens when carbon dioxide goes into our planet’s atmosphere and traps heat from the sun. This creates a greenhouse effect. This melts glaciers which rise sea levels. It also creates very crazy weather patterns. This can and cool down the earth in some places and heat it up in others, create droughts, and make very powerful tropical storms.
Both of these forms of climate change are caused by the same thing, which means they can be prevented by the same action. We hope to share with people that reducing the amount of electricity, heat, and gasoline they use, the healthier the environment will become.

Power Down Challenge at Brookwood
On Friday, March 27th the Climate Change GAP Group at Brookwood School put on a presentation to the entire upper school. The presentation included information on climate change, the effects of climate change, and how we can prevent it. During the day, the GAP group put on a challenge for the entire upper school called The Power Down Challenge. This consisted of turning off all power for the whole day suggestively (only using power when needed) and spreading awareness. The Power Down Challenge was founded by Polar Bears International. The day was a great success and the entire upper school became more aware. The group also talked with FAWE's climate change group and learned more about their experience and knowledge of climate change. The communication was a great experience for both groups.
