Currently, 33.4 million people are infected with AIDS. 97% of those living with HIV reside in low and middle income countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. The goal of our GAP project was to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS on a local scale and to use the fight against this disease as an opportunity to collaborate with peers in other countries to raise global awareness.
More than 25 million people have died of AIDS worldwide since the first cases were reported in 1981. However, in recent years there have been successes and some improvements in the situation. New global efforts have been helping, and prevention has helped to reduce HIV infections. Education is the key, and we hope that our efforts have in some way helped improve the situation.
