Driving Question: Are we able to spread the qualities of a global citizen through a virtual project connecting our students to other students around the world?
Mission Statement
We believe that the local and global community could be further taught about our cultures so this group was created to inform these communities through technology about the similarities and differences between our cultures. We plan to accomplish cultural awareness with Brookwood 7th and 8th graders, students at Colegio Bandeirantes in Sao Paulo, Brazil, FAWE school in Kigali, Rwanda, and possibly other schools through online photos, videos, music etc.
VCE is the Virtual Cultural Exchange GAP group which is essentially sharing information with local and global individuals through a blog. (http://global.colband.net.br/) One of our GAP groups main ideas is what it means to be a global citizen. There are four main qualities that make a global citizen which include understanding how to connect with cultures, learns and respects differences, takes a stand against inequality, and take action. By connecting, respecting difference, taking a stand, and taking action through this blog, it will allow for Brookwood, our community, and our partner schools to become better global citizens.

Local Project - A day in the life of a teenager
In order to spread awareness of the qualities of a global citizen and inform conversations with our global partner school, FAWE, we will create an online picture book of the daily life of a teenager at Brookwood, containing photos of such things as:
■ Breakfast
■ Commute to School
■ Schoolday
■ Lunch
■ Afternoon Activity
■ Dinner
■ Evening
Following our local project, we hope that we will share what it’s like to be a teenager at Brookwood. We also hope that the exchange of slideshows with partner schools could potentially help us understand each other’s cultures better. This will also bring us closer to becoming better global citizens, which include the qualities of understanding how to connect with cultures, learning and respecting differences, taking a stand against inequality, and taking action.

This is a photograph taken from when the Brookwood VCE GAP group and Mrs. Gantt (who traveled to FAWE this Spring) Skyped with the VCE group from FAWE (Sonia Kayitare, Chance, Humura Kamirwa, and Mupenzi Murielle). We talked a lot about our contrasting cultures and daily lives, and also explained our digital book project to them.
Global Project - iPad Photo Book
Our original plan was to connect with four global schools: Colegio Bandeirantes, FAWE, Kaiisi Project, and the American School of Bombay. In the end, we only connected with FAWE, an all girls school in Rwanda. In order to achieve this goal of completing the iPad Photo Book, both Brookwood and FAWE needed to take pictures. We used the photos from our Local Project. One of our teachers from Brookwood, Debbie Gantt, recently flew to Africa to visit the girls at FAWE. While at FAWE, she is having the girls there take pictures of their daily lives. Once we retrieve these photos from her, we will put all the photos on an iPad and use an app to make it into a comparison book. By doing this, we hope to learn the difference between our daily lives and culture through photos. Once this global project is complete, we are presenting at a fair at Brookwood. We will share our findings and hopefully spread qualities of a global citizen throughout Brookwood!

FAWE Schedule
According to Mrs. Gantt, this is a typical day for students at FAWE.
